Our identity for Hickory Crossing brings good design to a good cause – housing for the chronically homeless. Hickory Crossing, funded by the W.W. Caruth Jr. Foundation Fund at Communities Foundation of Texas, the James and Elizabeth Sowell Foundation, City of Dallas, Dallas County, and others, broke ground in April. A multi-unit facility in Dallas, between Malcolm X Blvd and Good-Latimer, Hickory Crossing is a multiunit development that will house 50 hard-to-serve residents, at a cost of about $15,000 per year – for housing, job training, and other social services. Its residents will come from the ranks of the chronically homeless, who it is estimated cost taxpayers about $40,000 a year currently to keep on the street – as they cycle through the jails, the emergency room, and state hospitals (local jail stays average $62 a day and state hospital stays $371 a day).
